- Jimmy Fallon’s Monologue; March 7, 2014

[Part 1 / Part 2]

I am grade 12 student who has just recently graduated. You might call me accomplished, and in a way, I am, but not in the way you’d think. 12 years of pouring over text books and being lined up to be judged in front of my peers has not made me any more intelligent. I can tell you the first 45 digits of Pi and I can explain to you the difference between an acid and a base, I can recite the Pythagorean Theorem in my sleep, I will recite lines out of a textbook like they are a religion. But I cannot tell you the value of security, or of kindness. The distinct contrast between personal health and personal gain. I can tell you in grade 10 four of my classmates attempted to take their own lives before finals. I can tell you our counsellors office is always booked. I can tell you how when I didn’t understand something in AP Chemistry my teacher asked me to leave if I could not participate in his class. I merely asked him to explain a question. Instead of doing his job and teaching, he told me to leave. Told me I was not good enough to be there. Mistakes are viewed as failure in these hallways. A wrong answer is a sin you must atone to, not a human error, but a flaw so grand it defines your entire life course. There is no “average” here. We all must exceed expectations. Do your parents know that a grade that is considered average is a “C”? When I got a C in fourth grade my parents grounded me for a month. They said I was lazy and stupid and incompetent and that I’d better smarten up and stop fooling around. I never fooled around. I am driven by a deep need to impress others. I never fool around. I worked and worked and worked, with a deep hollow of anxiety in my chest. I have never been good at History, but I worked and worked and I attained at best a low B. It was not good enough. It is not said but we are expected to put our education before our personal health. It is not asked of us, but it is what we must do to achieve what we are asked to achieve. Our teachers will tell you, “Oh, I only give them one hour of homework each night.” Which is essentially true, each of my five teachers only gives me one to two hours of homework each night. Hmm, that adds up to 5-10 hours of homework, and overdue classwork, and projects. Say goodbye to sleep, say goodbye to feeling calm. I’ve developed a deep rooted anxiety disorder due to school and perfectionistic tendencies. Even when you get 100 percent on an assignment they still criticise you, it is never good enough. One slip, and you are in deep deep trouble. I can tell you that 90 percent of us try our hardest, and our teachers and parents stand in the sidelines, screaming, “You can do better than that!”

Why I say our education system is flawed (via perfect-delusions)

I wont pretend to have worked nearly as hard as this person, but I know many who have. Shit can get pretty crazy. That said, I’d imagine many jobs and many courses in college are quite similar. Part of the process is learning how to get what you want without doing everything that is demanded of you. Find ways to cherry pick assignments, etc.

And if real jobs are just as cray demanding as high school, I’m glad i don’t want one. Stand up comedy all the way.

Project for my Social Psych class last semester. This poster series was created to 1) challenge these internalized stereotypes by bringing them to the viewer’s attention and 2) expand the range of role models by including a diverse group of women. Each poster follows the same basic pattern: a woman who has demonstrated her competency in a particular area refutes the stereotype that appears above her in the form of “Girls can’t …”. While the posters target girls ranging from children to young adults, I expect the message would also cause people outside that demographic to question their own beliefs about women and power.  I designed each aspect of the posters with several principles of social psychology in mind:

There should be a poster in this series for “girls can’t be funny” and have Sarah Silverman, or Ellen, etc. I hate hearing other comedians say that women ar enot as inherently funny as men, where in a vaccuum, I believe the split would be much closer to 50/50, as life is inherently funny for everybody.

The patriarchy was at work today.

When I had to use the bathroom I had to go get a key to open the door, but the men’s room wasn’t locked.

And there was no toilet paper in the women’s bathroom, but plenty in the males.

I’m so sick of all this oppression. Woman are people too.

life is so hard, white girl.

Asker Anonymous Asks:
Hello. I don't mean to offend I'm just curious. What is a kyriarchy? I've never heard this term before reading your info.

feministjewishfangirl:

That’s fine. The word kyriarchy is a neologism (recently made-up word), from the Greek roots kyrios (lord/master/guardian) and arche (leadership).

It refers to the intersection of different systems of oppression: the patriarchy puts cis men in power, structural racism puts white people in power, structural ableism puts abled people in power, and the kyriarchy is the intersection of ableism, racism, misogyny, and other forms of oppression.

"Kyriarchy" is a handy way of naming the massive, disgusting, socio-politico-economo-cultural machinery that puts (deep breath) cisgender, heterosexual, white, Christian or atheist, male, upper or middle class, abled, neurotypical, financially well-off, et cetera et cetera people on top.

I’ll give you the racism and sexism in play with people rising to power, but the cisgender, heterosexual, Christian, middle/upper class, abled, “neurotypical” (we can just say healthy) because that is the vast majority of the population being reflected in a democracy. Not that shocking.

I’m in the process of writing beat poetry. Slam poetry. Rap. It’s rap, I won’t be pretentious about it. I’m putting it to music and it feels great.

Oh yeah, if anybody still follows me on tumblr (LOL), and you want an update: You won’t be seeing anything from me. The closest thing you’re gonna be seeing from me for a LONG time is jokes on twitter. ( http://www.twitter.com/iamtruckerjohn )

I am practicing my stand up comedy, but im doing it in open mics, and it’s a slow process. I’m also practicing music more and more, and I would like to eventually combine the two (music and spoken word comedy) to make something great. BUT that’s long term. for now, I’m writing a rap, and I also tell jokes on wednesdays. The end.

PS: Oh wow I posted on tumblr.
PPS: Holy canadian squirrel balls, batman! Tumblr’s posting format is much better now, praise the internet gods.

[Insert generic status here about how I’m totally different from other girls because I play ONE MMORPG that I don’t necessarily give one general fuck for, but play to pry out guys and continue to feed them the fucking shittiest sob story about how I can’t find anyone who cares about “nerdy” girls…

Amen, sister. I think.

If not, well hey, nobody said self-satire was a bad thing.

you gotta remember the importance of keeping your ego in check and evaluating your flaws.

Always be positive to your future and to your present. As long as you’re on top of things you’ll have a good ife, but you can’t lie to yourself, you can’t be cunty to other people, and you can’t mistreat your body or your mind or spirit.
